Just before you submit your plans, ask yourself, "where's the clothesline going to go"?
Err slight oversight. I don't have a clothesline! I just assumed that my clothesline would live on the wall outside the laundry but no, you can't mount a clothesline on lineaboard, it has to be mounted on masonry. The only masonry is down the end of the laundry deck, at the end of the porch, but it has two shuttered windows in it and no width for a clothesline. The laundry deck is only 1.3m wide and most 'family' sized clotheslines are 1.5m wide anyway.
Major lesson A-M. So what are you going to do besides shrink everything in the clothes dryer? ..... not to mention power bills. We can't put an old hills hoist up in the lawn area as one, it would be grossly ugly, and two, the walk from the laundry would be too long and through pool gates! Any suggestions?
Here are some more photos of the laundry. A special request for laundry photos came from Villa Anna..... and rightly so. Dear Anna posted the very pictures that inspired my laundry, a very long time ago. They are still on my blog side bar.
So that's my laundry so far. I am hoping to have some pretty glass shelves installed along the subway tiled walls. I allowed 900mm distance between the benches and the overhead cupboards in order to have enough headroom to work at the bench and have some glass wall shelves.... and yes I can just reach the overheads.... being only 5 ft 3... it was always going to be close!

A-M I don't have a clothesline either. But I do have a length of cable that hubby put up that I can put my sheets on etc. The best thing though, it is completely removable. You just need two posts, (maybe one on your pool house) a couple of eye bolts attached to them and a couple of strong horse clips, or the things that clip a dog leash onto their collar. It works ! and when people come over the line is coiled up and put away out of sight. I love mine because I couldn't stand to have a hills hoist in the backyard, and I didn't want a fold out one either...eyesore!
Hope that's a help

I dry almost everything in my dryer. And I almost NEVER have anything shrink. I think my secret is I always use the delicate (or low) heat setting. Rarely does anything fade either. In fact sometimes I have to wash Travis' jeans separately and dry them a couple of times on HOT to get the faded look and to shrink them just a little.
Might be worth a try!
I also use the 'less dry' setting instead of 'more dry'. Everything gets dry with one cycle this way even towels. the only thing I have to dry more than once is the mattress pads off the beds and a quilt or comforter now and then.
Good luck,
Jill
My rented house has a hills hoist - a big old-fashioned super ugly thing - but I LOVE IT. It's the best damn thing for drying clothes quickly. It's only worth putting up a clothesline where there is fast-moving wind, otherwise it takes a while to dry the clothes (well, maybe not in Qld) ... but there are these large mobile clotheslines you can get at Howards Storage World - use 'em inside or out.
hi a-m
what about a retractable clothes line? We have a hills one,and when not in use it just sits in its box attached to a wall (or pole). When we can use the line, it just pulls on out and attaches to another pole. Ours is under our entertaining area as it is sheltered from the sun
We're still going through the "where will the clothesline go?" debate, but for now, I'm like A Melbourne Lass - I have a 15 metre length of 'clothes line' from Coles that's tied to a cuphook on the fence, and attaches to a downpipe on one side of the house, and the fretwork on the back veranda. I simply tie it up every morning when I wash, and roll it up and pop it in the peg basket when I bring in the washing. This way I still dry my clothes in the sun and breeze {which I love} but the line doesn't get dirty and is out of the way when we have guests.
oh no!! clotheslines are the bain of my existance at the moment..
you can get ones with poles, too bad you didn't know before you put down the beautiful decking :( - but like Lexy said you can get big mobile ones, try 'mrs peggs' as well.
i'm getting rid of my iconic hills hoist (smack bang in the centre of the yard) shortly in favour of a fold out one on the side of the house (my house is brick.. sorry!). the thing is that my grandfather was one of the founders of Hills, so I have a real personal dilemma!!
Just wanted to say, I just found your blog and your house is wonderful. I'd love to move in too. Good luck with the clothesline, nothing beats clothes dried in the breeze.
What about a post kit which can be bought to support the wall-hung clothesline? Maybe the posts could be attached to your deck joists :http://www.onlinedirect.hills.com.au/cattleprod/products/A1607ACC
Hi A-M. I'm not much use to you. I'm in an apartment at present and do the collapsible line inside [should see how small my laundry is], or the dryer! I think the retractable above sounds good! Gorgeous laundry, Never thought I'd hear myself so that! Julie
My nightmare subject. I now call the laundry my office as I practically live in there. Yours looks so beautiful and organised.
Wow that is one beautiful laundry room! (note to self: do NOT show my laundry room;) I hear you with some of the oversights, but hey with all the decisions you had to make an error or two was bound to happen. (at least that's what I tell myself!!)
Hi A-M
I know that my outdoor furniture supplier has one. All of their products are very high quality so check http://www.robertplumb.com.au/index.php?page=product&cat=35&id=69.

Holy crap A-M you weren't kidding when you said you loved the Laundry pic. Your laundry is almost identical! WOW It's GORGEOUS! *sigh* I wish I had such a beautiful workspace. A space like that would actually inspire me to do housework haha
Anna ;)
You have built my dream home, just finishing a slatted shed myself. Can only dream of building a wooden house in Australia, just got to hold out for a couple more years. Well done you, it's such a great achievement. Loving the blog.
Hi A-M,
I was reading one of my favourite mags today & saw an article on the Brabantia wallfix http://www.brabantia.com/Flash/#/page/1/-/en/ ...... and thought of you! I'm not sure if your clothesline dilemma has been solved bit this might work - es[ecially if t can be mounted on a fence post. Otherwise I see a ceiling mounted, wooden framed rope and pulley beauty inside your laundry (thank goodness for high ceilings!!)
I hope you find your solution soon.
Maureen
PS I have a 60 year old hills hoist and intend to keep it when I have completed my renovations and landscaped my backyard ;o)
