Boys Rooms And Giveaway

Do you think I could get a decent photo of these wall decals? This is the best I could do with the 'Compass' one. I tried day and night!

They are beautiful quality decals and challenging relatively easy to install... if you have patience...... which I have none of. Uggh.. fine motor stuff. Thank goodness for husbands who take over. I found them at Single Stone Studios. I have a spare 'Compass' (which I ordered.... just in case) that I would like to give away to one of my readers. It's a delicious Nautical Navy Blue. Just leave a comment here and I will draw out a winner next Monday.

I'd love to hear some suggestions on what you think makes boys' rooms 'pop'! I have left the 'upstairs' til last and have run out of 'decorative puff'' (and funds) so any advice would be most welcomed!

Happy Australia Day my Aussie friends! We're off to the park down the road for a BBQ breakfast. Boys request! As long as I have my thermos of tea and my deck chair, I'm happy. Perfect for watching 'scooter tricks'!

  3. HI AM - Happy Australia Day. I am just redoing my sons lilac room. I am doing white and red and blue, very nautical a bit boring but I have an aversion to murky browns and jungly things. I think that they mostly need lots of storage and clean lines and colours. I would love your spare decal. I have used them in my daughters room with mixed success, one lot I bought online have been fantastic, a big pear tree, but the others I bought in a childrens shop utter rubbish and rolled off within a couple of weeks. Maybe I failed to clean the walls properly !!!

  7. The compass rose decal looks awesome! I'm afraid my son's room has remained art-less for the past two years, so advice from me would leave you further behind than where you are!

    Happy Australia Day!

  8. I still don't know what to do for my little boy. I think any decorating should reflect their personality--because it is their room for a few years.

  9. Happy Australia Day A-M. I just love this decal and must admit that my sons room does need something on the wall and this would be just perfect. I think your boys room already does have that Whow Factor and it looks just gorgeous. I am going to get stuck into my sons room once he goes back to school. Every boy needs a desk, a lovely lamp and some great shelving to store all there goodies. But I always try and have a have a signature piece of furniture. A large vintage hutch or leadlight cabinet something to mix the old with the new. Have a great day. Sandy x

  10. Hi AM

The compass looks really good. I've used decals - with success and I am about to put a red magentic board into my little ones room - its from IKEA and was only about $30. I also have a few framed prints, a map and striped romans in both rooms - reading back over that list its amazing they can sleep at all. enjoy the holiday Sheila

  12. Hello A-M and happy Australia Day!
You know I have also been struggling with my own older boys room. Just wait till you have a 15 year old and anything that is vaguely 'cutesy or nice' does not last in his bedroom...believe me, I have tried and failed LOL
What I am doing for my young man (15) is a New York theme as this was his favourite place when we went over seas. We are getting a big picture canvas of New York and blowing up some pictures of his trip. I think any thing big and bold for a teenager is better than lots of little objects. Strong colours as in the bedding is also something my son likes.
The compass decal is wonderful and I have 2 others boys that would love it on their walls! Have a wonderful day.

  13. A-M, it looks great. I don't think you can go past Red, White and Navy for boys with a great navy and white rug on the floor and nice baskets in a white cupboard for their lego and cars. I am in the process of doing both of my boys' rooms up. Bedding bought and Initials for the walls spraypainted still haven't attempted to put them on the wall. You have inspired me!

  14. Happy Australia Day A-M. Looks great, how did your other boy's room turn out? I ahve 2 boys and one room has a feature wall in navy blue and the otehr boy's room has a feature wall in dark green. So I tend to decorate their rooms around those two colours. I have picked up great stuff from Etsy to put on their walls and the erst of teh decor comes from their nice wooden toys.

  15. YOu have done a wonderful job with your sons room! My boys still don't have anything decorating their walls, the decal looks fab. I am thinking of framing a world map for my boys room.

  16. this almost makes me want to have little boys to decorate a room just like it! Almost! :) I have a guest room that the compass would look perfect with. Ticking bedding...I can almost see it now! :)

  18. Oh A-M it looks fantastic...gosh...what a difference a decal can make to a room..a wall..I love it!
To me what makes a boys room pop is vibrant colours...like reds and blues...which is what I am using for little Jacq's room....he is such a BOY BOY..that anything soft or pastel just doesnt fit his little personality...wish me luck :)

Well done on the challenge of installing the decal! It looks just fabulous, as does the rest of your Son's room. My Sons theme is blue, red and white too, and you really cannot go wrong with it. It looks fabulous, and I love the nautical theme too. Well done, and have a great day!

  23. Happy Australia Day A-M!!! The room looks beautiful. I love the nautical theme, white bed, red and blue quilt. I think some slashes of red would really pop on that room. Looks terrific! Janette x

  24. Pick me! Pick me! As far as what makes a boy's room 'pop,' I think cheery colors and the boy's name in 3-D somewhere ... the name spelled out in block letters and hung on the wall for example. (My friend's husband is a very talented artist and sweetly painted each individual block letter of my son's name. He painted a froggy scene on each letter, since my boy has a froggy-themed room. It will be the perfect touch...if we ever get them hung!) :)

  25. Happy Australia Day A-M!!

the decal turned out great - i know how tricky they can be, i put just a little birdy one on top of the door frame of my office - kudos to you both for getting something that difficult up!!

I'd go for some retro advertising posters, always really strong delicious colours. galerie monmarte should have something fabulous!

  27. I also have two boys and as we have recently moved house am just starting to think about decorating their bedrooms. My main thoughts when decorating a childs room is to stay away from all the licenced products available. They grow out of it quickly and it dates a room so fast. Buy the best furniture you can afford in as classic a style as possible and it will pay off in the long run as you will only need to change the accessories not the whole room. A mistake I made at our last house was too much going on in the one room, I had cowboys and nautical (both were so gorgeous and I couldn't hlp myself!). Lucky, I had a scond boy. This time one gets the coyboys and one gets nautical and gee, that compass would look so good on his wall! :)

  28. I LOVE this.
I was just thinking about my son's bedroom the other day and how I want it to flow with the house yet still seem boyish enough for him.
    You have inspired me!!!

  29. The room is gorgeous A-M! My son and daughter share a room and will for some time, so decorating has to be pretty neutral. Your post inspired me to finish a project I've had in mind for a while - stretching a few of my son's favourite old T-shirts over canvases to hang on the wall. Ultimately he'll move onto more grown-up decor, but in the meantime it's easy artwork and a bit of nostalgia for me!

  30. Lovely AM you have done it again!
I love the neutral paintwork and the navy accents. Perfect for a young lad.
My youngest has the warm neutral walls and a navy and white ticking roman blind. It is such a classic. I am sure he would love a decal to make his room pop too.
    Happy Australia Day.

  31. Hi A-M,
Happy Aussie day to you and your family! I hope your brekky at the park wasn't overtaken by flies like ours did!
I love that room, and the decal looks great (very nicely applied!). I ended up with 2 girls, much to my surprise.. but I think whatever colours you choose for kids rooms, boys need stripes, girls need spots!

  32. Wow it looks really good, I had saved that link from your last post in which you mentioned the decals. I am going to do map wallpaper in my son's room hopefully by next month, the colour scheme is black and blue with hints of red.
Happy Australia Day to you too :)

  33. Hi A-M
Well not much to suggest for a boys room other than pirate's shops and rigging... maybe a bit too wild.

So.. I wanted to say HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY... hope you had fun at the bbq!! xx Julie

  34. Loving your blog, am a new follower! I think your boys room is gorgeous and will stand the test of time. An idea for you.....I have recently purchased a set of vintage oars and an old flag off ebay for my 4 year olds room. These were both relatively inexpensive and will make for a fun and individual room. Anna J

  36. Happy Aussie Day A-M!
The boys room looks great. Love the decal.
Have you looked at the beeding range that Lexington have? Great red, white and blue theme...lots of stars, big checks etc. We are thinking of doing our boys rooms again and as you know I am all for doing it myself and for not alot of coin. That theme will be going in both boys rooms and we will be having old style Tiger moth planes etc hanging from our 11 foot ceilings and some plane prints and planes of planes about in one and the same with a car feel in another.

Ship rigging from a sail merchants made into a swinging chair, like a hammock would be cool.

  37. Looks like you (and husband) did a great job with the decal. My boys have a sort of travel theme going in their room with the biggest accent being a large map of the world canvas that I picked up at IKEA a couple of years ago.
Please tell me you mad the bed in the picture and not your son? I cannot get my boys to make their beds neatly, and I don't want to turn into a total nag, but boy, it drives me crazy!!!

  39. Hi A-M
Hope you enjoyed your Australia Day. I am gathering together all the pieces to do our little James first big boys bedroom (he is 3). We have also choosen a nautical theme so he dosent grow out of it to soon. I have the bedding & a lamp ready but havent found the right bed due to the quality of most of them. The style of bed I have been looking for is the same as your boys. May I ask where you got it from ? I would love the decal for his room as it would finish the wall off perfect & maybe he wont be so dissapointed he didnt get the "bob the builder" bed cover he wanted. Im such a classic girl , I couldnt bare to look at a licenced product every day. Love your blog ,look forward to reading it every day.

  40. very nice decal:) I think some red would 'pop' very nicely with the navy! Maybe a huge floor pillow for lounging!

  41. I love a touch of red in a boys room. Neutral walls, navy blue and then a pop of red.

  42. Hi A-M,

I think your boy's room looks gorgeous as is (as does your whole home)- but, just a suggestion - I am placing some hanging, suspended items in my boys's rooms to add a bit of 'wow' and fun for them. Some ideas are: a Pirate Ship in your younger son's 'Red' room - and painted Vintage planes in your older son's 'Navy' room (goes with the compass/travel theme!) For some inspiration you could look at the Pottery Barn Kids' web-site, as per the link below:

    http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/hanging-clipper-airplane-decor/?pkey=droom-accessories

Just an idea, but, as I say, I think the room looks fabulous as is!

All the best - I am sure what ever you do will look stunning - they are very lucky boys!

  43. A-M I agree with some of the other comments that you have very cleverly mixed masculine and feminine elements throughout your home. Although I love my "girly design" I still need to consider my son and would never want him to feel like his visual needs aren't catered for. Your boys room looks perfectly fitting for their age. To me it looks like you hit the nail on the head :)

I can't get enough of peeking inside the house that A-M built :P

  44. Re Bed: Ten years old. Would never recommend the manufacturer.... had problems right from set up.. so can't even recommend the business I purchased it from as they were not interested in recifying problems either... not the best quality... now has a squeak that we just cannot find or get rid of!... a real character bed! Lie still son!. Am on the hunt for better quality, yet affordable children's furniture that I can recommend...(all the super beautiful stuff I have found from the US is just ridiculously priced once you get it to Oz) stay tuned! 47. I think that decal is awesome! so appropriate for QLD!!! I think for my boys room to "pop" you gotta mix in the vintage with the modern cons, and I made sure my blues (although different cheap bits and pieces) were all the same tone - looks great!

  48. Hi A-M, the boys bedroom looks wonderful and what a fantastic nautical touch 'the decal' would be a great feature in our house as we wouldn't have to say Never Eat Soggy Weetbix!

  50. Boys rooms need space for reading, for building, for sleeping and I love patterns that do not show the dirt.
I love ticking, plaids, tartans, and personalizing the room with what they love, be it sporty items or what they have a passion for.
I quite like red white and blue for boys or picking out a "band" that rocks...like the Beatles!
Boys need space for organizing collections too-
rocks, shoes, books, maps, pocket knifes.
Love the swiss army logo too- or the ski patrol logo
    which is the same...

  51. I think it's what the boys add themselves that makes the difference. I love it when my kids come up with an idea that I hadn't thought of but it's just the right idea. I was looking for something to fill a display space and then my six year old decided to put one of his lego creations there....and what do you know? It was perfect!

  52. Oh, I'd love to be entered! Pretty soon I'll be redoing my son's nursery to a more grown up sailboat theme - would love to put the compass up in there!

  55. Your boys bedrooms already 'pop' - they are gorgeous. If you asked my little man (4) what makes a great room he would tell you LEGO. Actually there is LEGO everywhere. Oh and don't forget the trains and planes.

At my little man's age, his greatest treasure is his artwork and that of his sisters which take pride of place in his room, and are a wonderful addition. You can't go wrong with artwork created by the room's tenant.

  56. Such a lovely idea for a Big Boys Bedroom.... I think sometimes it's more difficult to decorate for boys.
I love the combination of Red, White and Blue with natural linen.
