Still Love It

I have spent all morning looking for this damn photo! What is it?.... 6am?... I have been sitting here looking for it since 4.30am. I was not going to let the search for it beat me. I did do a bit of image decluttering along the way though. Phew, found it.....not in my image folders....but in my iphoto stash. What was it doing there? Anyway, I was looking for it for a client who emailed me for some advice. I know I have posted it before but I keep coming back to it as the inspiration for my next home's terrace and pool. I know that I will not be building on a block as big as last time and I think this is the perfect solution to fitting in a pool, an indoor/outdoor room, and possibly some lawn up the back to the left.... on a narrow inner city block. What do you think? Will this image be dated by the time I find my next project? Seems pretty timeless to me.

PS I'd do a better back fence. Oh, and a smaller second floor so that there is some roof peeking out over the terrace and not just a second floor wall. Oh, and thicker posts (200x200). Just sayin'.

  1. I think it's beautiful and such a great area to entertain in. The only thing I would want is more deck space for sunning. I know we're not supposed to worship the sun anymore, but I do enjoy spending a few moments on a lounge chair in direct sun - could go for some of that right now, if fact. Too bad it's chilly and raining!

  2. Oh Adrienne, having been a sunbaking teenager of the 80's, and starting on the long journey of life time skin cancer surgery now.. I shy away from direct sun and nag my boys to death re the sun. Doesn't help that we live in the skin cancer capital of the world! :( A-M xx

  7. I remember this pic. So exciting to hear you talking about the next house and I'm positive you will create a beautiful character home with soul on a teeny block (unlike some around the traps).

  9. I love it. Pretty timeless I would say. I think the stonework around the posts is a bit heavy for such a small area.I think with a bit of A-M tweaking it would be excellent.

  10. Don't you hate it when you can't find something that you know is there. That photo is well worth digging for though. I would definitely vote on the side of timeless - pin it up on your inspiration board.

  11. All that stone, natural timber, cane, weatherboards, greenery and the comfiest cushions combined with the cutest dog. Just prefect!! How could perfectionism ever date??

  21. I adore this photo - perfect layout! I've always loved having the pool close to the house like that. Agree about the pillars, but don't make them too big so that they block the view.

Oh, and the first thing I thought of when you said 'second floor terrace' was 'boys jumping from second floor terrace into pool'! They will be older by the time you build - crazy teenage boys doing wild stunts with friends. Please tell them that is bad for their health! ;-)

  22. I love this! One of my favourite "looks" is when a pool fills an entire backyard. Seems to induce relaxation, which is what a backyard is for. Unless you're me, but that's another story. Love it! ~ karen

  23. This is beautiful and would work just lovely on a smaller lot. I also like the changes you would make! Bigger posts and a roof instead of wall would only add to the timelessness!
