Quite Simple Really

Look at this simple room makeover I found over at House and Home.

A bit of wallpaper, a new rug, bedside and bed linen (with styling)... some funky lights and 'Bob's Your Uncle'. It's not rocket science.

I love 'Before And After's' like this.... proves that if you break it down, step by step, you can achieve a room with 'wow' factor... or in this maybe 'awww, isn't this sweet factor'...

.... and as much as I don't like the wallpaper on it's own... it works for this room. What do you think?

PS. I bet those lights were highly affordable, accessible and in plentiful supply.... unlike said hemisphere.
Just sayin'.

No Work And All Play

I blame the book. My little daily meditation book said, "do something fun today".

"If you're relaxing, let yourself relax, without guilt, without worrying about the work that is undone..... Today I will do something fun, something I enjoy, something just for me. I will take responsibility for making myself feel good."

Can't argue with 'the book', even if it was a Monday and a work day and my inbox was full.

I took myself off to the movies, watched the world go by in a coffee shop, while eating a big slab of carrot cake, hung out in a book shop and bought this little set of 'City Walks With Kids In Paris'. I am living 'as if'...... as if I WILL be doing those city walks with my boys, sooner than later! Somehow. So that little box, plonked on my desk, is my sort of my vision board.

I must admit I spent the afternoon/evening actioning my inbox... so much so that the kids stayed in the pool until dark and they were all wrinkled..... but I fell into bed happy..... and so did they!

It's so good to do something really nice for yourself.

Happy Tuesday!

Monday Nook

Should I bring back the 'Monday Nook'? I get so many emails and comments from readers saying how much they loved my 'Monday Nooks'. I feel a bit guilty. Why did I stop? Did I run out of nooks? Did they used to only be nooks in 'The House'?... I can't remember. Maybe I stopped when I sold 'The House'. We need to resurrect the 'Monday Nook'... yes? Starting today. Good. I am going to stalk other people's nooks.

How's this one for a start? This gorgeous little one.... in a cupboard... was created by Sarah, over at 'Thrifty Decor Chick', with her bare hands. Yes, not a tradesman in sight. I have loved this forever....well since Sarah created it earlier this year. She's so clever. Moldings set her heart a flutter. I get that.

Look at the wall moldings and the edge of the bench. Yep, it's all in the moldings.

Sarah's 'How To' is HERE.
Grrr....that lights are so cute and cheap in her hemisphere
.... that you can wander into Lowe's and find a cute light for $18US.

Anyway, a sweet nook to start the ball (nook thing) rolling again.

Happy Monday!

Sundays.... in Paris

This morning...... I'm back in Paris.

It's early and I've just found an empty cafe, just over the little bridge from Notre Dame.
You know the place. Sit with me a bit?

We might have some crepes and some coffee.
Ordered in broken French of course....."les crepes et un cafe s'il vous plait"...
The waitress smiles at our attempts.

We sit for ages in that little cafe, watching the world go by, breathing it all in......'osmosing Paris'.
We remark that we could just sit there all day and we would be happy.....

.... but there are things to do and such places to see. Let's go! Spend the day with me?

I dream.
.....and while I wrote this post.....I was there.....
.....even with accordion music playing in my head! Ha! True!
You never really get over Paris.
I shouldn't have seen that movie last week. I'm a Paris tragic all over again.

Happy Sunday!... "Bon Dimanche"
We're off on our bikes.
One day we'll all be on bikes in Paris!
One day.

... And It Ended In Paris.

It's been a busy week.

I know I have already told you.... but I just can't help mentioning it again (that's the great thing about being able to waffle on about anything on your own blog)......I'm adding to my lighting collection over at Cape Cod Designs. The latest is this beauty. Sort of stops my heart.

It was so hot this week, I resorted to hiding out in an airconditioned establishment between appointments. The coffee was unexpectedly nice.

I met a bloggy friend for coffee in this nice French place that had bookcases and ladders and stuff.

I wore my favourite cuff. An item I coveted over at 'The Old Boathouse' for a very long time. Katherine held it for me for my birthday early this year... because she knew I had my eye on it.
It has a matching ring and brooch.... but I only ever wear one of them at a time. I'm not much of a fashionista... is that the right thing to do?... not be too matchy, matchy?

Went hunting for rugs for a customer.

Aren't these nice?

She took this one. I would have too. So plush.
Very 'Greg Natale-ish'. I love his talent and his penchant for black and white.

We're enjoying our Christmas tree like you wouldn't believe. The lights go on before sun up. I kid you not.. I am so grateful you shamed me into being a decent mother and putting it up.

My little Eiffel Tower, in my kitchen, inspired me to ditch the shed yesterday morning and scoot off to the movies to see Woody Allen's latest...'Midnight in Paris'. Oh it was magical... Paris...the music... lots of Col Porter!

There was even a really close shot of 'Shakespeare and Co', on the left bank. I was there this past March. I need to get there again. Soon. Movies about Paris do that to you, don't they?

The trailer for the movie, if you're interested, is HERE.

One more week of school and then we're on school holidays. Yay.

Happy Saturday!

A Nook Before I Rush Off

How I love this little nook. It's almost worth building a wall, out from the stairs, in from the front door, in my next place... just so I can have a nook like this.

Sorry, I'm not staying to chat this morning.... as I have mothering and stuff to do.

Pop over to Cape Cod Designs and have a look at my latest light.... and take a deep breath before you do. Heart stopping. Big statement. But true.

Happy Friday! Catch up tomorrow. xx

Thoughts Become Things

I get little notes from 'The Universe' every day in my inbox.
This one below was very timely yesterday:

" It's being alive, A-M, that makes you rich.

             So easy to forget,
             The Universe  "

If you want a daily reminder in your inbox..... of how to live with gratitude, how wonderful life is and how you can achieve anything you want to..... then here's the site:

As they say, "Thoughts Become Things".

Happy Thursday!

Yesterday

I made some brownies. The problem with this is that I eat them.
Even for breakfast.

I bought some flowers. I don't have a garden so I try to have fresh flowers in my kitchen... to make us all happy. I get my money's worth as I am always saying, "look at the flowers boys, aren't they beautiful"?
They feign enthusiasm. They feign a lot of stuff really.

I rode my bike into town for an appointment. It's not glamorous. It's hot and my hair sort of like mats to my head under my helmet. I only do non-glamorous appointments via bike.

I am keeping my bike next to the Grand Piano. For fast getaways. I am sure I am going to get a note under my door soon. They've seen me wheeling it up the corridor. I think they are steering clear of me though, as they know that I know that they don't like my boys.

Nigella and Brian say hello. Here they are being lovingly hand fed, hand showered and tickled under the chin by carer. We have recently discovered that Brian has severe anger management problems and his rabid head bobbing is not a mating thing but just pure anger. That's him on the left, in the middle of a 'head bob'. Be happy Brian, you're living 'the life of Brian'... and want for nothing. Nothing I say.

That's about all from here this morning. I am watching a personal training group on the riverbank. It all looks so painful and hard. Like punishment? Is there something in that? Coming from someone who used to do it? Hmmm...

I'm off for my run.

Happy Wednesday!

'The Art Of Afternoon Tea'

Alexandra's Aunt's 1950's Shelley 'Regal' trio with Triple Choc Cookies!

So I was searching for a nut-free, 'Jam Drops' recipe the other day, when I came across this exquisite blog.... 'The Art Of Afternoon Tea' by Alexandra Nea.

Waterford crystal, Wedgewood and Pink Butter Biscuits.

Don't you just love it when you find talent so amazing it stops you in your tracks.
I have since devoured her whole blog.
Literally.

Smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwiches on vintage lace.
Sigh.

Alexandra is an extremely accomplished Fashion Designer who indulges her artistic talents in her spare time. Her beautiful blog was created to share her loves: drawing, baking, family recipes and all her beautiful treasures that she has collected over the years.... china, teacups, linen and lace.

Jam Drops on a Royal Doulton coffee cup, on a vintage cotton napkin, on a Donna Hay green glass cake stand!

Alexandra's jam drops and the recipe from Donna Hay that Alexandra sourced:

Ingredients – makes approx 60
180g butter
1 cup caster sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 egg
2 cups plain flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
Donna Hay strawberry jam available at the General Store
Preheat oven to 180C. Grease and line 3 baking trays. In a large mixing bowl beat the butter, sugar and vanilla until light and creamy. Add the egg and beat well to combine. Sift in the flour and baking powder and mix to form a dough. Roll 2 teaspoons of the mixture at a time into balls. Place on the prepared trays leaving room for the biscuits to spread and flatten slightly. Using your finger press a hole halfway into each ball, fill this with jam. Bake for 10-12min until slightly golden. You may need to rotate your trays in the oven. Remove from the oven and add a little more jam to each biscuit whilst still warm. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Today, you might like to take a little break, sip some tea and enjoy the beautiful drawings of Alexandra's afternoon teas. You might find a recipe or two that just needs baking ...sort of.. like.. immediately.

Thank you Alexandra, for the use of your beautiful drawings for this post. They make my blog look so pretty.

Happy Tuesday!

PS. Now I REALLY miss my pretty teacups. They're in a box in the back of the shed.

This Is My City....

It will come as no surprise that we spent most of the weekend on our new bikes.

It's amazing how you see your city in a different light when you travel bike paths as opposed to highways. Who knew there were so many bike paths?

We stopped at every park and playground. No. Really.

I was instructed to photograph every minute of it all.

Me and 'Tacker'.
He was happy. He loves riding his bike.

This park was under in the flood :(
Now we need rain...
...but they're emptying precious water from our dam....
...because they're scared of another flood. Go figure.

We found a really nice park....

... in which to play...

... and have our weekly 'Family Meeting'.
Little one was 'Chairperson'. Again.
This week we read about 'how important it is to share our feelings'.
They feigned interest.

This thing watched us the whole time we had our drinks at our destination coffee shop.
My boys attract wildlife.

We stopped and watched the rock climbers.
I screamed for them when they sort of fell a bit.
Not for the faint hearted.
Little one wants to do it so desperately now.

It was a beautiful weekend.
Blessed.

Happy Monday.
