Countdown

Ok, it's sinking in that I'm outta here in 2 days time. I've started hugging and kissing my boys way more ....and telling them that I 'miss them already'. That's the hardest part, being away from them for a few weeks.... and being a long way away. I'll rise to the challenge. They are so busy with school and stuff, they won't even notice I've gone. Thank goodness for Skype.

I found this great New York Travel Guide through Flipboard last night. It's full of everything you could imagine... tourist tips and shows and updates on everything. How lovely that they will be lighting up the Empire State Building, in the colours of all the participating countries' flags, during the Olympics. I'm also very keen to catch a Central Park performance of Stephen Sondheim's 'Into the Woods'. I played in the orchestra of the Queensland Musical Theatre Company's production way back in 1996. It would be a wonderful trip down memory lane if I could see it again.... as an audience member and not a member of a 'flea pit' (that's what I called the orchestra pit in that production, as I am sure there were fleas down there). Glen Close is in it.... who'da thunk?  I hope the weather stays fine!

I have the longest wish list of things to do. I have been sent the most comprehensive lists of interior and design related things to see and experience, by my readers. Thank you so much everyone. I am so grateful that you took the time to write to me. I am collating it all on the plane trip. Everyone will be watching in flight entertainment and I'll be scheming with bits of paper and a notepad!

I have a big day ahead of me in the shed, finalising orders and shutting up shop for a few weeks. I so don't feel like it! I just want to go now!

I'm all packed! I'll share my packing experience with you tomorrow. You've gotta see it! I'm chuffed at how compact I am travelling. Helps that it is summer over there.

I can't sleep so I am off for a run I think... when it gets just a little bit lighter!
Happy Friday!

PS. Yep, mastered 'Blogsy'....although I cheated this morning and used the laptop when I am supposed to be practising iPad blogging. You'll just have to suffer what I send you from New York, with limited practice time under my belt. Any advice on Instagram? I have unlocked my iPhone and bought a 'Travel Sim' card which I am trying to activate and test. I tell you, those 'help desk ticket answerers' at Travel Sim have mastered sarcasm! Very intolerant of my blonde questions. I'm biting my tongue in my replies to them. Anyone else used this service?

  3. Hi A-M,
Have just travelled around Europe for a month using a Travelsim. Both my husband and I took one. He found it frustrating to use (the whole phoneback thing) but I persevered and once I got used to it, it worked well. One thing you should check tho ( I am not very tech savvy) but although we could receive emails (using iPhones and travelsim) we couldnt send any emails using our bigpond email accounts. I have a gmail account too which worked fine (both receiving and sending) so I used that to send emails. So could receive bigpond emails but couldn't send any either on wi-fi or 3G when the travelsim was in the iPhone. This was a deal-breaker for my husband who didn't have a gmail account and needed to stay in contact for work.
    Enjoy your trip!

  5. Hi A-M, One last little tip from me... Whatever you do, don't use your iPhone for Internet roaming. NOT ONCE! Not even to look up the address of a store in desperation when you're standing in the street and can't fine it! I only used mine for 2 hours during the month I was in the US and my bill was $1500! Phone calls are horrendous enough (texts are okay), but it's the Internet roaming that will kill you. You mentioned WiFi spots - do seek those out and used your iPad there instead. Just don't do any banking or business or anything in those unsecured areas, but I'm sure you know that. And if your hotel doesn't provide a secure password (ie a different one for each room; not the same one for each guest), don't do banking/business transactions in your room either. I used to go and find a hotel that did offer security and paid $10 for a hour's Internet access.

But other than that, have fun lovely fun! Weather is glorious. What could be more wonderful than August in the Hamptons??!! xx

  7. Hi A-M, I used a Travel Sim when I was there last year. I was extremely disappointed as I could not pick up 3 or 4G on the Travel Sim. So I was nipping into Maccas, Apple Stores and Starbucks solely to use their free wifi. As at October last year, Travel Sim didn't have any arrangements with any of the Telco's in the States for supplying 3G. So all those wonderful Google Maps I had created, plotting all the places I wanted to see, were useless. I had to take out the old pen and paper and write down all the addresses and memorise the map. No GPS! It was very frustrating. So the main thing I used the Travel Sim for was texting. Might be another question to ask the "help" desk before you go.

    1. Thank you so much Jennifer, I have just asked their help desk to confirm this. I want to use it for instagram and twitter. I'm afraid I am an old fashioned map person from way back so lack of GPS won't be too bad for me. It's taken me all day to get it all set up and working for Instagram. All the tests work. Fingers crossed. A-M xx

  8. Hi A-M, I used a Travel Sim around the States last year and found it extremely frustrating as it would not pick up 3G or 4G only free wi-fi. I had prepared loads of Google Maps, where I had plotted all the places I wanted to visit and these were useless. I had to keep on ducking into Maccas, Starbucks or an Apple Store to connect to the wi-fi and write down the shops and addresses. We even had to buy a paper map. Like who uses them anymore? As Debbievds said, the Australian email addresses wouldn't work to send emails. Facebook messaging and my @me.com email addresses were the only ones I could get through. As at October last year Travel Sim didn't have any arrangements with Telcos in the States for hooking into their 3G network. You may want to run that by the "help" desk before you go.

    Jennifer xx
